Course Costs
Boarding charge
Cadets are charged an annual one off sum of $5000+gst payable on the 20th January for each year of the cadetship. This money is allocated to the operational cost of running the cadet's hostel and cookhouse.
General costs
In order to fulfil Health and Safety and work requirements cadets will need to consider acquisition costs for the below listed items. This is a guide only and subject to change. PLease check with us prior to purchase.
1st year
January:
- Knife, pouch, belt - $60.00
- Note book pouch - $15.00
- Bridle -$100
- Breast plate -$80
- Crupper - $50
- Saddle blanket - $80
- Saddle bags - $100 (optional)
- Leather lace up work boots, 1x safety, 1x non safety - $150.00/pair
- Rain wear - $300.00
Note: For first year cadets a saddle is supplied but cadets may bring their own saddle and tack, subject to the training manager's approval.
March:
- Heading pup - $300
- Three vaccinations - $84 total
- Worming - $35
- Registration - $38
- Chain/clip/collar - $12 (dog food is supplied and pups are sourced through trustworthy contacts in the dog trial circuit)
September: Fully broken in huntaway - $1500 - $2000
2nd year
- Pre-January: Saddle - $600 (S/H) up to $1800 new.
- Annual: Dog vaccinations: two dogs @ $56 total
- Worming: two dogs - $80
- Registration - $38 per dog
- Staff can advise on the purchase of dogs and saddlery once cadets are at Waipaoa
StudyLink
Cadets are classed as full time students studying concurrently and are eligible for $1000 toward course related costs, a student loan and a boarding allowance of up to $180 per week based on parental income earnings. The decision on these option is up to parents to action.

- Applicants are advised to wait until mid January to fill out study link documentation as official acceptance will not apply until the course is registered at that time.
- Following enrolment onto the course in mid January, confirmation that cadets are full time students and course dates will be available to study link for verification purposes.
- On request verification that the course is residential can be supplied to back up living allowance applications.
- On request a course costs summary from the training manager can be supplied that can be used to apply for $1000 course related costs loan.
